Brad Lander, a Democratic congressional candidate and former New York City comptroller, was acquitted of misdemeanor charges related to an incident at an immigration detention facility in Manhattan.
The charges stemmed from a protest on September 18, 2025, where Lander and other elected officials attempted to inspect conditions for detained immigrants at 26 Federal Plaza, which houses an ICE office.
A Manhattan federal court judge ruled that Lander was not guilty of obstructing an elevator during the protest, stating that the prosecution failed to prove he intended to block access.
The ruling highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and the rights of detainees, as well as the legal boundaries of protest actions.
